Rules Governing the Retrieval and Utilization of Fish and Wildlife

Vermont Proposed Rule: 09P011

AGENCY: Natural Resources, Fish & Wildlife Dept.

CONCISE SUMMARY: The purpose of this rule is to ensure the retrieval and proper utilization of the fish and wildlife resources thereby minimizing the wasteful taking of wildlife that are hunted, fished, or trapped. The rule would serve the following functions: Require that Hunters, anglers and trappers make a "reasonable effort" to retrieve wounded or dead fish or game; Prohibits hunters, anglers and trappers from abandoning the carcass of any fish or game that are harvested; Excludes these requirements from applying to sick or diseased animals.

TYPE OF PERSONS AFFECTED: Hunters, anglers, and trappers.

COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS: There should be no economic impact to the public. People who take fish or wildlife, will be required to make a "reasonable effort" to retrieve the animal. This should not result in any additional costs to the public.

SCHEDULED HEARINGS: The Board will hold three public hearings from 6-8 p.m. on March 10, 2009 at the Essex Office of the Fish and Wildlife Department in Essex, VT, March 11, 2009 at the Pavilion Building in Montpelier, VT, and March 12, 2009 at the Ed Kehoe Conservation Camp in Castleton, VT Those meetings will be advertised and posted on the Department's web site.

DEADLINE FOR PUBLIC COMMENT: March 20, 2009
