DISPOSITION ORDERS

Disposition orders are records retention policies approved by the Public Records Advisory Board (PRAB), the Commissioner of Buildings and General Services, the Director of Public Records, the Secretary of Administration, or the Public Records Commission between the years of 1938 and 2008. All active disposition orders remain in effect until superseded by an agency record schedule and/or a general record schedule approved by the Vermont State Archivist.

Local public agencies can find copies of their orders on our Disposition Orders Issued to Local Agencies web page. Records officers and liaisons in each state agency should have copies of their respective orders on file locally.

Compilations of State agency disposition orders (by current agency name) are available. If your agency is not listed, please contact us at to see if any orders were issued to your agency.

In addition to agency-specific disposition orders, the Commissioner of Buildings and General Services (BGS) issued "Housekeeping Disposition Orders" or record schedules that may be used where applicable and also remain in effect until superseded.

The Public Records Advisory Board (PRAB) also issued guidance to public agencies on purging "Non-Record Material" in 2001. The Non-Record Material List was superseded in December 2010 by GRS-1000.1000 (Transitory Records). Please see General Schedules for more information.
