These collections solidly document Vermont from 1920 to 1990 (with scattered pre-1920's photos). Though created for government purposes, the photographs are often artistic in their composition and provide unique views of Vermont and Vermonters. Some of the photographs were created to promote tourism and show the scenes and activities used to shape national perceptions of Vermont. Others, though taken to document agricultural, transportation and other government programs, offer unique views of Vermont's changing landscape and those who lived upon it. To suggest the range and quality of photographs, a few examples are provided from each collection.
